When should I have my drinking water tested for heavy metals?

Testing for metals is particularly useful in certain situations. This article shows when it is advisable and what it reveals.

Initial situation

A test for metals is particularly useful if the house installation is old or unknown, if lead pipes are possible, after renovations, with new fittings, in the event of prolonged stagnation, if there is a metallic taste or if babies, pregnant women or sensitive persons live in the household.

Procedure

Typical parameters are lead, copper and nickel; depending on the installation, other metals may be relevant. We offer comprehensive testing for the most relevant heavy metals. Sampling is typically carried out as a random sample (Z-sample). According to the Federal Environment Agency, the concentrations of lead, copper and nickel at the tapping point are primarily influenced by the materials of the water supply system or drinking water installation, such as pipes, fittings, taps or water meters.

Result

The findings show whether substances are transferred from the installation into the drinking water. If this is the case, we recommend a staggered stagnation test according to UBA. This allows the point of metal release to be localized, i.e. the tapping fitting or upstream domestic installation.
